The highlight of this workshop is undoubtedly Alan's stellar work with Rafael Gutierrez-Velez on the Liszt Transcendental Etudes. To transcend its "etude" nature, the etude must be transformed into a Gothic tale, where the sonorities and colors tell such an emotional story that the listener forgets altogether that they are technically difficult. Fraser and Gutierrez have met this goal to an unprecedented degree, opening new uncharted territory in their interpretations. The sessions take place largely on a Steinway concert D in the Stuttgart Hochschule in Germany, an instrument of such sensitivity and color that it responds beautifully to every subtle manipulation of the key, allowing many more colors to emerge than one usually hears in these works
