For the most part, the orientation of this workshop was towards practical short-term interventions rather than a deep, long-term revamping of one's piano technique. When a pianist plays well, a major intervention risks destabilizing their technique. Better to focus on musical inflection, phrase shaping and orchestration, with tangential reference to the potency of hand's arch and the phrasing possibilities inherent in the horizontal movements of the arm. Intriguingly this indirect approach often evoked greater changes in the pianists' technique than meeting the challenge head-on - a more immediate improvement in both ease of execution and sound. Highlights include
* creating a magnificent, truly resonant fortissimo with a complete absence of banging in the Liszt First Piano Concerto.
* Improved use of the thumb for a singing inner voice in the Rachmaninoff. D minor étude tableau
* use of physical gesture to inflect every aspect of articulation and phrasing in, of all things, a Rossini piano sonata
* creating stress-free, rhythmically dynamic tremolando octaves in the Beethoven Pathétique Sonata.
* a deeply therapeutic softening and structuralizing of the hand in the Scarlatti Cat's Fugue to address an injury
* Two choral Feldenkrais ATM workshops that led to improved vocal tone and a greater sense of ensemble
* Seven full-length awareness-through-movement lessons offering the pianist a chance to totally make over their physical relationship to the instrument
