Waltz Questions

Hi Alan, You demonstrate beuatifully in the DVD how inflecting the rhythm of the waltz brings out its character (play the 2nd beat a little early, and the 3rd beat a little late). Do these inflections typically apply to both the melody and accompaniement or to the accompaniement only? For example, right I am studing a waltz with some 8th note scales in the melody. Should these be played evenly or toghether with the left hand (leading to ueven 8th notes)? Thanks, Zack

GREAT question! Hard to say! Generally, running 8th notes don't get the '2nd beat early 3rd beat late' treatment because it makes them sound too uneven. But it would be interesting to see whether the left hand MUST "toe the line" rhythmically in this instance or whether it might still 'lilt' a little bit compared to the right. And maybe it's all a question of degree: if you reduce the 'lilt' in either or both hands, do you necessarily have to eliminate it all together? AFF

Thanks Alan When I asked this question I had already guessed that the answer would be (like anything else in music) "it depends" . Perhaps it would be easier to discuss a specific piece. I am studying Grieg's waltz Op. 12 no. 2 Sheet Music is available for free here: it doesn't really have 8th notes "runs" because the 3rd beat 8th notes (measures 7,8 ) are articulated differently then the ones on the earlier beats, so perhaps slightly delaying the 3rd beat here would fit the composer's intentions. What do you think? And here is a sample performance I found on youtube. I am not sure how much she "tilts" the rhythm though. BTW, when can we expect the new books? Zack

Good morning, Zack Thanks for that sample - unfortunately I am snowed under right now and really can't take the time to look at it - anybody else? has been published and printed - the only reason we are not already selling online is that there's a hold up with my web designer and the new page. The proofs for 2nd Edition are still being checked... AFF
