Schumann Reconnaissance

Dear Mr Fraser, In your video, you briefly commented on how the repeated notes in Reconnaissance should be played in the right hand. Could you explain more in details? Such as how much should the movement be coming from the thumb or the forearm? There is also a general difficulty I am facing with the piece that is keeping it light and soft. It feels as if bring out the top line contradicts the movement of the thumb. Hope to hear from you soon! cy

In brief, it's not a question of how much thumb or how much forearm to use. People generally have a problem with this when they try to relax and end up dropping their arch. If you keep a very strong arch structure in your hand, you'll suddenly feel the power from which it's possible to play the repeated notes easily. You won't even be thinking any more about whether it's the thumb or the forearm. Just try the passage out and see if you can discern what you are doing to disempower your arch - then stop doing that! Thanks for the question! AFF
