My Poor Technique

Hi everybody, I've been playing the piano for a very long time...Since I was 7, now I'm 28. At the age of 12 circa.... I fell in love with jazz and started at first listening then studying the afroamerican piano culture. I did almost everything on my own for some years untill I was admitted in the civic school of jazz in my city. Actually, I've never focused my studying on technical issues, I'd rather concentrated on improvvisation, harmony, ear training. So, as I started playing in clubs, having my own projects and being regular pianist of the main big band of the city...I'm so happy to have this great chance...I had to face the "big deal"....MY POOR TECHNIQUE. I find Mr Fraser's work and research sublime, great technical skill at disposal of a real heart and mind. Let's get the point...I found a teacher. My culture of classical music is not so relevant but though I can see how prepared this pianist could be his music sounds to me....I don't know. I asked a lot of pianists, some study with him some don't, and I had different reactions about his music. My dear friends I ask your opinion and leave a link.... Thank you very much.

thanks for your post! You teacher certainly has chops. His hand is in very good shape, and he looks like he is doing a lot of the things that I recommend to be both comfortable and potent on the keyboard. This is no guarantee that he knows how to TEACH that kind of playing, but it's a pretty good start (Canadian understatement). I find the playing slightly lacking in fire - I wish that if he had that much technical facility that he could make Op 10 #1 a little bit more exciting instead of just churning the notes out. Piano technique isn't JUST about digital dexterity and note clarity. But this is a small caveat - the pianist who remains unnamed is really very accomplished. And finally thanks for your kind words about my own work! Best wishes, AFF
