@ : Alan has uploaded some really interesting new video clips recently. I know I could have posted this somewhere else on the forum, but this section seems to get the most attention. Here is the lecture I have watched a dozen times already: . For those who did not know: Alan's YouTube channel with an overview of all his clips (including lessons, lectures and concert performances) is . There are also rather interesting technique teaching videos to watch . @ : How is Maya Repich doing? Paul

Hi Alan! 1) About Lovro: Yeah the sound is utterly undifferentiated still I kind of love this bonechrushing raw sound he is able to make pitty he does nothing but. 2)Congratulations to your recent recitals I really appreciate listening. I've for a long time wished somebody would take up a serious and long thread here about recording it is so important when you have some of the technique and all the abilities it all comes down to accoustics halls pianos and recording. There is a very distinct difference between playing for the hall and for the mic. So for a start what recording devices do you use? Is it a waste of time to edit for a YT-clip? 3)Nice discussion about armweight. Should put an end to the debate but of course it won't (helas). When you discuss the difference in sound and style Horowitz Vs Rubinstein I think that it's also about physical constitution size/thikness off hands and fingers etc.VH would have a really hard time keeping up Rubinsteins compact sound and vice versa. If not just impossible. So they are both smart. So for people with a constitution like you and me maybe it's easier to be a little more Rubinsteinesque ? Best regards Eric

What do you think are the major differences between Horowitz's and Rubinstein's technique and sound? Do you think that Rubinstein relied more on arm weight than Horowitz did? Although Rubinstein had bigger hands, Horowitz could produce a much more enormous sonority (even though it was the illusion of loudness).

About Rubinstein/Horowitz both of whom I revere highly, read the last chapter on Arm Weight in All Thumbs... I think the differences in their technique are less about constitution and physical build and more about knowledge and personal preference - character... AFF

Arm weight technique is new for me. I got some basic information and I am searching more features of this technique before using it.

Don't bother using it - there are better ways to make a piano sound well - it will mostly only confuse you. You may gain a certain amount of relaxation, but make sure the relaxation allows you to move better and doesn't lead to an inert, lethargic, phlegmatic piano touch... AFF
