Hi, good to see you here!

Gyorgy Sebok

I posted a video from one of his masterclasses some time back. Here are some new clips. The first clip is from a later masterclass, interspersed with interviews. What he tells the violinist about her impeccable playing brings to mind Horowitz's quote "perfection is itself imperfection." There is a lot of first -class musical wisdom here. Here is another part of the documentary that is particularly enlightening. Sebok plays through parts of Liszt's Mephisto Waltz with some commentary. His commentary is very simple but it really illuminates what the piece is about. Later on he says Liszt would probably disapprove of his linking a piece to a story but it seems like a helpful way to get inside a piece. His technical capability is very impressive but also a little surprising. I cant explain why but for some reason before he plays I dont expect very much but the moment he starts playing everything changes. He has a highly attuned sense of gesture and he can instantly assess the physical state of his students. For example in the first video when he teaches the violinist about the entrance in the Brahms Violin Sonata. Here is the link.
