A Pianist
I would like to hear comments on this pianist. I first heard of him from a DVD on Van Cliburn 1989. He was the winner, but even before the winner was announced, his playing captured me instinctly. I can't say his playing is the introspect, mature type you normally find in the great (and older) master, but his direct approach, his passions and the volume of his sound seems to be second to none. Unfortunately, I found his playing rather inconsistent, being especially intense at the competitions he won (Van Cliburn 1989 and the 13th Chopin ), not nearly as good in studio recording. Even more unfortunate was his early death. According to Wikipedia, he suffered from a stroke shortly after the Chopin competition. He recovered, but a second stroke in 2001 paralyzed his left side. He died at age 35 in 2005. His technique seems to have evolved from 1989 to 1995, with less unnecessary movements.....
